Fancy Clothes, beautiful paintings, rubbing elbow to elbow with New Brunswick’s Cultural Elite, and the Mayor…Yes the Court Tavern might be open again, but if you walk a few more feet down, you’ll come across what may be the shot of class that New Brunswick has been needing.

The Alfa Art Gallery (www.alfaart.org), situated at 108 Church St. right off of George St., glows like the brightest diamond in a place where diamonds are popping up all over this rough. For those passing by that night it seemed like it could have been just another one of New Brunswick’s busy gatherings, but what they don’t know is that this was the beginning of what could very well be the crossroads for the arts in New Brunswick.

Vesslin Kourtev, the owner of the gallery, and wife Galina, the Galleries Assistant Director say: “The most important thing for us is to be an interdisciplinary gallery…” but it’s more than just an art gallery people, so calm down. It’s an educational studio for well established, emerging, and amateur artists…. ”we want to help people make connections in different arts…” Hear that Mason Gross Kids?… go and get’em…

As well as being the Gallery owner, Vesslin Kourtev is a well accomplished painter who has taken his original style of painting and applied it to the local beauty of New Brunswick. It really captures the grace of the evolution of this changing city. You can view these paintings on display at the gallery. As well some stunning and provocative pieces by local artists Doreen Valenza, Michael Fenton, and Kevin Lyons. As I said, it is also not just an art gallery, the night was capped off by an amazing and beautiful opera performance by Anna Veleva (www.annaveleva.com). Also The Olson/De Cari Duo will be performing on January 17th(www.olsondecariduo.com).

So if you find yourself longing for more than just another drunken night stumbling around the streets seeing how many bars you can get to in one night…or need a quiet supporting place to get your creative juices flowing…then pull out them wrinkled khakis, get your best Sunday shirt on, and head to the Alfa Art Gallery. You’ll be glad you did. Trust me.
