Louis C. K. at the State Theatre 6/27/08

By Diana DePasquale • Jul 7th, 2008 • Category: Features, Spotlight

I’ve seen Louis C.K.twice previously in the past year. Both times were at what you may call… dumps: PNC Bank Arts Center and NYC’s Town Hall. OK, so Town Hall isn’t so bad, but compared to the State Theatre, I may as well have been sitting in trough urinal at a ball game. The State Theatre’s richly appointed interior decor is exactly the right accompaniment for baby diarrhea jokes and simulated masturbation.

Downtown Comic Book Store Threatens Yuppie Way of Life

By John Farley • May 29th, 2008 • Category: Features, Shopping

New Brunswick is evolving along a familiar path. Contained within its meager borders are convenience stores and tire fires, grade schools and stoned bus drivers. The rumor mill is abuzz with talk of a nuclear power plant being constructed on Route 18. Our little city resembles the Simpsons’ hometown of Springfield [...]

Gallagher at The Stress Factory 5/23/08

By Diana DePasquale • May 27th, 2008 • Category: Comedy, Features, Spotlight

I have to admit when I heard Gallagher was coming to New Brunswick, I was incredibly excited. As a child of the 1970’s I vividly remember him and his sledge-o-matic my misspent youth of endless TV watching. As an adult of the 21st century and student of pop culture, I simply HAD to see the man live in person regardless if I get hit in the face with flying chunks of watermelon. Still, when given the opportunity to see HIGH ENERGY PROP COMEDY, I am all over that like Carrot Top on a syringe full of either botox or anabolic steroids.

Danger, Secrecy, Intrigue, Kraut Rock

By John Farley • May 3rd, 2008 • Category: Features, Reviews, Spotlight

I’d been trailing him for months by way of Oslo, Sri Lanka, Cairo, Edison. As each clue turned up another dead end, my mind obsessed over the question, “Where is Guy?”
I received word that Guy (that’s ghee, like the Indian clarified butter) had left 4 associates behind in New Jersey of all places. [...]

Hub City Hellrazors 83 - River City Roller Girls 58 - 04/20/2008

By John Farley • Apr 24th, 2008 • Category: Features, Sports, Spotlight

The Hellrazors delivered a crushing 83-58 defeat to Virginia’s Roller Girls on Sunday. From rinkside, we witnessed first-hand the damage wrought by the Hellrazors as they dominated the Roller Girls from the initial whistle. River City suffered several disadvantages while their jammers, the skaters who score points, were in the penalty box on [...]

So, What the Hell is Roller Derby? An Evening with the Dirty Dames

By John Farley • Apr 17th, 2008 • Category: Features, News & Events, Sports

The cracking of bone like distant gunfire, the penny-flavored blood that warms the tongue, the all-too-familiar reek of blackened leather, these can mean only one thing: a new season of roller derby is upon us. In this latest incarnation of the predominantly female sport, New Jersey is represented in the rink by a coven [...]

Alfa Art Gallery Opening- January 30th 2008

By Mike Farley • Feb 19th, 2008 • Category: Arts, Features, News & Events

Fancy Clothes, beautiful paintings, rubbing elbow to elbow with New Brunswick’s Cultural Elite, and the Mayor…Yes the Court Tavern might be open again, but if you walk a few more feet down, you’ll come across what may be the shot of class that New Brunswick has been needing.
The Alfa Art Gallery (www.alfaart.org), situated at 108 [...]

Mardi Gras at the State Theatre - Feb. 2, 2008

By John Farley • Feb 14th, 2008 • Category: Features, News & Events

The whole city of New Brunswick is slowly adopting the habits and traits of New Orleans, coming into its own as a party city. There are several venues throughout the New Brunswick landscape that boast a festive Mardi Gras schedule around February, the most surprising of which is the State Theatre on Livingston Ave. [...]
